Good news from OICE 2018 (Osservatorio Italiano dei Congressi e degli Eventi), the monitoring of the Italian meeting industry presented today, on 18th July by Alessandra Albarelli and Giulio Ferratini, respectively president and vice president of Federcongressi&eventi. The meeting has been organised by Turismo Torino e Provincia Convention Bureau in collaboration with the Torino Chamber of Commerce.
According to the research, promoted by Federcongressi&eventi and carried out by the Graduate School of Economics and International Relations (Aseri–Alta Scuola in Economia e Relazioni Internazionali dell'Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore of Milan), in 2018 421.503 congresses and events were held in Italy with the total amount of 597.224 days (respectively + 5.8% and + 6.7% compared to 2017). The average duration, equal to 1.42 days, remains stable while the participants, 28,386,815, and the bednights, 42.319.349, are down slightly (-2.4%). The slightest sign of these last two data is mainly due to the decline in congresses promoted by international associations, a phenomenon that indicates that Italy urgently needs strong promotional actions to face the competition of increasingly competitive destinations.
Facts and figures in Turin
In 2018, 12.133 events (+7.3% compared to 2017) were held for a total of 974,896 participants, 1,334,650 bednights (respectively +1.5% and +3.3%) and 15,258 days. 2,520 events had a duration of more than one day, which generated 16.2% of attendance in hotels. The associative congresses increased but companies organise the largest number of events (59.7%), which are held for 70.7% in conference hotels. As in the Italian meeting industry, the majority of congresses and events (64.2%) have a local dimension: national and international events decreased.
